Forgotten stories of Czech courage on the Argentine pampas

Argentina and the Czech lands. On the map, an ocean and thousands of kilometres lie between them, yet their destinies are woven together by an invisible thread of extraordinary human stories. The relationship between our two countries is not a matter of modern trends - it is built on foundations laid centuries ago by Czech architects, barons, visionary entrepreneurs and fearless explorers. Join us in uncovering the fascinating parallels that still resonate between Prague and Buenos Aires.

The Czech footprint in South America

When lovers of South American culture and the business elite meet this year on the turf of Noe Polo Club, we will be continuing a tradition that began to be written as early as the 18th century. According to statistics from Argentinian immigration authorities, over 30,000 Czechoslovaks emigrated to this country in successive waves. They were not ordinary migrants, however; they were people who saw an opportunity to achieve something great in the harsh but fertile pampas.

Baťa's empire on the pampas

The strongest parallel between the world of business and the Argentinian countryside is, without doubt, the story of Jan Antonín Baťa. After leaving Europe, this industrial magnate chose the endless possibilities of South America as the space in which to realise his megalomaniacal visions.

In Argentina, he founded several satellite towns and huge agricultural estates. One of the most significant became Estancia Batatuba. On the Argentinian pampas, Baťa did not merely build factories; he applied his unique management system, raised cattle, horses and crops. He connected the raw life of ranchers (estancieros) with the most modern business logic of the time. He showed that Czech enterprise can flourish even in the middle of the wild pampas.

A hundred years of diplomacy and shared prestige

Our connection with Argentina also has the official seal of highest quality. We recently celebrated the centenary of the establishment of official diplomatic relations between Czechoslovakia and the Argentinian Republic. Even during the First Republic, Argentina was the most important business partner in all of Latin America for our key exporters and economic elites. It was a country of "special importance" - a safe haven for investments, culture and people with big dreams.

Why do we meet at Noe Polo Club?

When you think about it, the August gathering in Březina u Macochy is no coincidence. The concept of Garden Chic elegance, the nobility of polo and the tradition of asado over an open fire - all of these are pieces of the mosaic that our ancestors helped put together in Argentina.

Over a glass of robust Malbec and conversations about new projects, we will not be at just another social event. We will be continuing a story that began with Jan Antonín Baťa and thousands of other Czechs who left a piece of their hearts and their courage in Argentina. It is a great honour for us that His Excellency, the Ambassador of the Argentinian Republic, will be attending the event in person.

Come and celebrate this exceptional bond in a place that shares the same values: passion, elegance and respect for tradition.
